In the past decade, women have seen the rise and fall of trends such as pedal pushers, skinny jeans, statement necklaces, ballet flats, cargo pants, and cocktail rings. Men embraced popped collars, spiked hair and athletic club t-shirts, not to mention Ed Hardy, oversized diamond earrings (thanks David Beckham) and Von Dutch trucker hats.
Fashion has varied greatly, and it always will… but what are the important trends to be a part of this year?
The 80’s silhouette
Just when you thought we’d turned our backs on shoulder pads for good, they reappear!
By far one of the biggest trends we’ll see in 2017 is the 80’s look returned. It makes sense too, what with a controversial celebrity-turned-Republican in power, Stranger Things being the hottest thing on TV and the return of Dynasty. The 80’s is everywhere, so of course fashion will mimic that, and the best way to represent this era is definitely with a statement shoulder.
As well as big shoulder pads and exaggerated suit jackets, we’ll also see round shoulders with cinched in waists, puffball shoulders and oversized cap sleeves.
Seaside stripes
Stripes are rarely out of fashion, and while school and sailor stripes are big, it’s seaside stripes that trump in 2017. Think beach towel stripes in soft hues of coral, lilac, light grey, white, yellow and turquoise, as well as red and white deckchairs and umbrellas for inspiration.
A bralette to bare all
For those with a good level of confidence (and not too much cleavage on show), bralettes take the crop top trend to the next level by removing the ‘top’. Lingerie-type pieces will be paired with evening skirts, cropped jeans, slinky suits and more, so start working on your abs!
Shocking pink
Pink, candy pink, baby pink, flamingo pink, hot pink, bubblegum pink, ballet slipper pink, deep cherry, raspberry, oriental fuschia – all shades that are destined to shock in 2017. You’ll find hot pink maxis, lemonade pink trench coats and every type of heel in this daring colour.
70’s psychedelic prints
The 80’s isn’t the only decade 2017 will be channelling, with 70s prints bringing a touch of flair. Think geometric prints, flower power and curves in earthy yet vibrant colours.
Shades of blue
One of the easiest trends to wear this coming year is the shade of blue, from the palest seafoam to the richest cerulean. Blue is a tune that almost everyone can sing, and fun can be had by mixing up the various shades.
Ruffles, ruffles, ruffles
2017 will pull inspiration from Spain and the Caribbean, with ruffles, ruffles and more ruffles. Heavily featured in resortwear and swimwear, ruffles are also added to mini skirts, jackets, blouses, sweatshirts and heels. The more outlandish the better.
Hearts out in the open
Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve in 2017, wear it on your chest and bring a touch of romance into your wardrobe. This cute symbol will be emblazoned on jackets, shirts and all over jewellery and accessories this year, and may even replace pinstripe or polkadots as the pattern of choice.
A signature slogan tee
Everyone has something to say these days, and with words and fashion both being powerful communicators, there is no better way to make a statement than with a chatty, conversation-starting t-shirt. Henry Holland recently celebrated his brand’s 10th anniversary by rebooting his signature slogan tees, while Dior’s first female creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, has made several strong political statements with t-shirts such as her ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ product.
