To know if your garment is suitable for dry cleaning, check the laundering label. This will normally indicate this with a ‘dry clean only’ sign. If you are still unsure, or your label is not clear enough for you to get an indication, consider the fabric you wish to dry clean.
Any fabric that is made from PVC, polyurethane or plastic is generally not suitable for dry cleaning. This is because the plastics react with the solvents used in dry cleaning, degrading them and causing the fabric to deteriorate at an accelerated rate.
Clothing made of silk, wool, velvet, rayon, silk and acetate, or clothing that is made with a blend of some of these fabrics should always be dry cleaned. Dry cleaning leather and suede reduces chances of the fabric cracking and shrivelling.
Furs must always be dry cleaned as washing them will cause the skin to shrink, while some furs such as mink are very delicate. Clothing that has beads, sequins or other embellishments should be dry cleaned. Embellishments that are glued on instead of sewn on may suffer some damage.
Lined jackets or any clothing with lining should be dry cleaned, as washing causes the interlining to come apart. Pleated skirts, clothes that bleed colour or shrink, and fabrics that don’t retain their shape very well when immersed in water such as woollen garments, are best dry cleaned.
